Chromecast Ultra

Google Chromecast Ultra review: The latest Chromecast works a treat with 4K and HDR, but doesn't offer enough to justify the higher price.

4K and HDR compatible ; Casting is easy ; Easy to set up

No Amazon Video ; Mains adaptor mandatory ; Expensive for what it is

The latest Chromecast works a treat with 4K and HDR, but it’s a little pointless.

Chromecast Ultra review: Better video quality comes at a cost

The Chromecast Ultra does exactly what it promises to do: reliably stream 4K HDR video to compatible TVs. But the marginal increase in quality, coupled with a dearth of 4K content, means the device is hardly a must-buy.

Simple setup and easy to use ; Excellent video quality ; 4K streaming works great over WiFi and Ethernet ; Compatible with most popular streaming services

Marginal video quality improvement over 1080p streaming devices ; Limited 4K content selection at launch ; Twice as expensive as the regular Chromecast ; No remote ; No Amazon Instant Video support

Google's original $35 Chromecast is so useful and so cheap that it was almost a no-brainer. At double the price, I can't quite say the same about the Chromecast Ultra. It works as promised, but the dearth of 4K content makes me hesitant to recommend...

Google Chromecast Ultra review

Google's Chromecast Ultra is a slick and simple way to serve up tons of 4K Ultra HD content in glistening HDR.

Simple and affordable 4K streaming ; Widest HDR support available ; Intuitive interface and setup ; Supports YouTube HDR ; Dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet for strong connection

Cross platform search still mediocre ; No Amazon video

Google’s Chromecast Ultra is a slick and simple way to serve up 4K Ultra HD content, including the addition of HDR in both major formats. The latter feature is a significant upgrade that could pay dividends over 4K streamers without HDR, such as the...

Google Chromecast Ultra review

There's a new 4K Chromecast in town, but the results are mixed...

4K HDR support ; Intuitive and easy to use ; Fast and stable streaming ; Plenty of content

Lacks Amazon Video app ; Lip-syncing issues ; Needs constant mains power ; Double the price of the standard one

Limited 4K apps and a high price make the Chromecast Ultra a difficult product to recommend

Roku and Chromecast come with 4K now, but you don't need them yet

The built-in apps on most Ultra HD TVs are good enough for now

4K looks great ; Ethernet is an option if your Wi-Fi is bad ; Can mirror Chrome and your Android phone

No Amazon Video ; You’ve got to find the content yourself ; Should probably have an actual interface at this point

The built-in apps on most Ultra HD TVs are good enough — for now

Google Chromecast Ultra

Google's 4K-capable Chromecast Ultra is the least expensive UHD media streamer available, but you still need a smartphone, tablet, or computer to control it.

Ethernet port for reliable 4K streaming. Relatively inexpensive for a 4K media streamer.

Requires a smartphone, tablet, or PC. Almost twice the price of the 1080p Chromecast.

Conclusions Google's Chromecast Ultra is the least expensive 4K media streamer currently available, and it has all the ease of use, reliability, and convenience of the original Chromecast. At nearly $70, however, it costs almost as much as the...

Google Chromecast Ultra review

A 4K streaming stick for people who don't really need one

Simple to set up ; Effortless 4K streaming ; Casting Chrome tabs to a TV is handy

Most TVs have in-built 4K streaming ; Missing Amazon Instant Video ; Expensive

As well as it works, 4K TV owners just don't need the Chromecast Ultra

Chromecast Ultra review

Google's micro streamer makes the jump from 1080p to 4K HDR

Cheap, effective 4K, HDR streaming ; Built-in ethernet adapter ; Google Home integration

No native Amazon Video support ; No remote control ; It’d be easier to navigate with an interface

There’s almost no refuting it: Chromecast Ultra offers one of the best values for streaming video devices for 4K TV owners. There’s not as much benefit for the 1080p crowd, but if you’re looking for powerful, fast streaming in a device the size of a...

Chromecast Ultra review: Do you really need this streamer?

Cheap and beautifully easy to use, but currently the Chromecast Ultra is largely redundant

Reasonably priced ; Optional Ethernet connectivity

Must be plugged into the mains ; No support for Amazon Video

Couple that with a price that's more than double the Full HD Chromecast and it's no longer a purchase you can make without thinking. The £30 Chromecast 2 pulls that feat off magnificently, as does the Chromecast Audio, but the Ultra? I think I’ll pass...

Google Chromecast Ultra review

If you have invested in services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Spotify, then a Chromecast is a great way to get content onto your TV. If that TV is 4K, then the Chromecast Ultra can carry this high definition quality from your phone, tablet or...

If you have a 4K TV and a Netflix subscription, the Chromecast Ultra is worth the £69 asking price. The fact it is so easy to use and works best with the Google Home app means you can easily throw it in a bag and use it on different TVs wherever you...
