Roku SoundBridge M1000

Roku's SoundBridge M1000 is a snazzy piece of industrial design, built for piping digital audio from a PC (or Internet connection), to a home stereo. ...

Stylish industrial design, outstanding functionality

Display can be hard to read from a distance

Universal plug and play support, wireless and wired networking, and both analogue and digital outputs combine to make the Roku SoundBridge M1000 a top-notch network music player.

Roku SoundBridge M1000 and M2000

The software schizophrenia and the inability to address network hard drives directly keep the Roku from being the best music player yet for PC users.

Stylish looks. No TV required. Compatible with Apple iTunes and can also play WMA, WAV, AAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis files from your PC. Handheld remote. Plays Internet radio (indirectly). Flexible configuration options.

Software download required. Separate software needed for WMA and iTunes support. iTunes support only includes ripped or imported songs, not purchased tracks. No photo or video support. Can't talk directly to network hard disk.

Roku SoundBridge M1000 review

The Soundbridge M1000 doesn't break with Roku tradition; it looks the part, sounds the part and is pleasingly promiscuous in the software department

Roku SoundBridge M1000

Roku SoundBridge is a network music player that lets you play your Mac or PC digital music files anywhere in the house - connecting your stereo or powered speakers to your computer's digital music library.

Supports iTunes and Slim Devices' SlimServer software ; Includes 802.11b wireless card ; Large, bright text display ; Rhapsody support via a third-party plug-in ; Simple interface ; Optical and coaxial digital audio outputs ; Works with Windows and Mac

Can't stream secure AAC files purchased from iTunes store ; Side-mounted cable covers aren't durable ; Small remote control ; Pricier than competing models that also stream video and images ; Lacks a headphone jack

In the final analysis, the Roku SoundBridge M1000 is a better-than-average audio-only digital media receiver. It's better-looking and slightly more affordable than the Slim Devices' Squeezebox but not quite as durable or as stable as that model

Roku SoundBridge M1000

Convergence shows many faces to music lovers. If you've got the bucks, you can add a hard-drive-based music server to your system. Or you can pay a custom installer to bring IP-based networking to every room in the house. But if you just want to move...

Roku SoundBridge M1000 digital soundserver

Digital soundservers aren?t necessarily the most photogenic devices on the planet. Their nature as a bridging device seems to dictate that they should be tucked out of sight and merely heard, not seen. Roku?s SoundBridge is the exception however...

Good looks, easy to set up and use, reliable connection ;

Requires third party music playing software, not the cheapest soundserver

It may not be the cheapest wireless music server on the market, but it is certainly one of the better looking - not something you'd be ashamed to be seen with. Ease of use and general quality of performance were also first-rate, making this a quick and...

Roku SoundBridge M1000 and M2000

With a uniquely clean design and built-in iTunes support, a readable display, a simple infrared remote control, and a reasonable price, Roku's SoundBridge M1000 can fit well in your home stereo system.

Support for compressed and uncompressed audio ; digital and analog ports ; easy to set up ; text is very readable

Expensive ; software has some rough edges ; no support for encrypted iTunes Music Store files

The SoundBridge doesn't offer music storage. Instead, it streams music data over your home network from Macs or PCs running iTunes. Just select the Share My Music option in iTunes' Sharing preference pane

Roku SoundBridge M1000
