Roku 2 XS

Roku was first to market with a network streaming box capable of playing Netflix videos, and its product line remains the one we'd recommend to our non-techie friends and relatives. Our techie friends and relatives, on the other hand, know there are...

Brain-dead simple to set up ; Broad range of apps and services ; First Roku streamer to support games

No DLNA support, so you can't stream content you own over your network ; Supports a very limited collection of audio and video file formats and codecs ; Can't mount disc images

The Roku 2 XS is a fabulous media streamer—for casual users, at least.

Roku 2 XS review

The Roku XS has a good stab at bringing web content to your TV, but it's too expensive for what it offers and is no match for the WDTV Live or the latest Apple TV.

Easy to set up and use ; Supports Netflix and iPlayer

Can be sluggish to use ; No digital optical-out ; YouTube not supported ; Poor streaming and USB playback features

I can't help feeling that the Roku XS is caught between two stools, mainly due to the pricing. At £99, the XS is the same price as the Apple TV and more expensive than the WDTV Live, and both of those are far superior products.

BBC iPlayer, Netflix and USB media playback on your TV thanks to a tiny box

Easy set up; access to iPlayer and Netflix

Limited content; limited format support; no playback of media stored on your PC

The Roku 2XS is easy to use, but needs more quality content or a price drop

Roku's tiny internet media player makes it to the UK, but is it work the money?

Easy to set-up ; Simple navigation ; Great version of Angry Birds

No coax or optical digital audio out ; Lacks DLNA support ; Poor USB media playback ; Lacks some key services such as YouTube and Lovefilm

Roku 2 XS: Popular Web Streamer Adds Ability to Play Games

The latest version of the popular Roku media streamer adds Bluetooth support and a microSD card slot, allowing you to use the Roku2 for downloadable games. Out of the box, the Roku 2 XS (The latest version of the popular Roku media streamer adds...

Easy to use ; Access to tons of free and paid Web content ; Enhanced Bluetooth remote has motion sensor

No 5GHz Wi-Fi support ; No support for streaming media via home network

The petite Roku 2 XS offers casual gaming support via an enhanced, Bluetooth enabled remote, but its ability to stream a ton of free and paid Web content to your HDTV is still its strongest selling point.

Roku 2 XS

Roku is calling its new line of streaming-media boxes "Roku 2," but this is actually the fourth iteration of the device, which started its life as the "Netflix Player" in 2008. Like Apple TV, this is still a Netflix video streamer at its core--and a...

The Roku 2 XS is an ultrasmall Wi-Fi streaming-media box that offers dozens of Internet video and audio services, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Crackle, Pandora, NHL, NBA, and MLB, among many others. It works with HD and standard...

The best streaming channels require paid subscriptions or pay-per-view fees. The Roku 2 XS doesn't currently support DLNA access (streaming media from networked PCs), and USB file support is very limited. Don't expect a full-blown Wii-like gaming...

Thanks to a varied range of content offerings--including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and Pandora--that beats the Apple TV, the Roku 2 XS is the best all-around streaming-media box you can get for less than $100.

New Roku Streaming Box Gets Smaller, Angrier

Roku's latest shrink-rayed media streamer comes with a gaming remote for playing -- you guessed it -- Angry Birds.

Netflix channel now has 1080p streaming, 5.1 surround and subtitles — if your bandwidth supports it. Big, beautiful HD content on some channels like Vimeo

Lengthy setup time. Forget about playing your MKV and other high-bitrate files, unless you convert. RF Bluetooth motion controller feature is limited to playing games, provides no navigation or UI functionality

Roku 2 XS

User friendly, great media capabilities and competitively priced – but not much mainstream content

Easy to set up and use; motion-sensitive gaming remote; plenty of free content

Local file support could be more straightforward; not much mainstream content

Roku 2 XS: Performance Like some similarly priced devices, the Roku’s picture is perfectly watchable – but, again, it falls down slightly in the sound-quality stakes.

Roku 2 XS review

The Roku 2 XS is clearly designed to compete with AppleTV

affordable media player with access to BBC iPlayer and Sky NOW

no LoveFilm or other UK broadcasters, requires credit card details during installation

Its graphical interface may not be as slick as that of the AppleTV, and the need to provide credit card details before you can watch anything is annoying. However, the Roku 2 XS works well and does provide a slightly wider range of services than the...

Roku's tiny media player tries to beat the Apple TV at its own game

A mixed bag of a product that works well in some ways, poorly in others and is just a little too expensive
