Livescribe Echo smartpen

A pen with a built in voice recorder, Livescribe's Echo smartpen is the second version of this digital note taking product. A successor to the still a...

Simultaneously records audio while writing, excellent recording quality and volume, easy to use, third-party app store, pencasts

Thicker and larger than a regular pen, cap is easily lost, software isn't the most intuitive

If you regularly take notes, the Livescribe Echo smartpen is almost a must-buy. Excellent recording capabilities, ease of use and an app store that will only grow make it a wise investment.

Amazon Echo (2017)

Everything you loved about the original in a smaller, cheaper package.

Excellent value ; Easy to set up ; Expandable range of skills ; Clean audio and simple voice control

Similarly priced speakers offer better sound

It doesn’t have the audio prowess to take on the best Bluetooth speakers. However, clear audio, great looks and a significantly lower price than the original make this smart assistant a winner.

Amazon Echo review

The new Amazon Echo is cuter, smarter, and cheaper, and with a firmware update, now has improved acoustics.

Interchangeable shell allows you to mix up design ; Updated Alexa features include individual voice recognition and routines ; Compact ; Audio output Jack

Sound on calling feature was more muffled than with original Echo ; Acoustics better with firmware upgrade, still hoped for bigger sound

We’re glad the Echo is more affordable and more compact than before, but a little disappointed sound quality took a turn for the worse. Overall, the new Echo is more approachable and will likely be extremely popular.

Amazon Echo (2017)

The Amazon Echo is a great-looking, affordable smart speaker with the best voice assistant technology.

Less expensive and better-looking than previous Echo. Alexa is the best voice assistant ecosystem. Adds 3.5mm out. Loud.

Not much bass.

Alexa is still our preferred voice assistant, especially for smart homes. Google Assistant is right up there, Siri has some work to do, and Cortana is just hopelessly behind.

Amazon Echo Connect

Using your Amazon Echo speaker as landline phone is a great idea, but the company's Echo Connect, which lets you do just this, works poorly.

Lets you use an Amazon Echo speaker as a land-line speakerphone.

Buggy. No hold function. Lacks call logs. No way to enter DTMF tones.

Bottom Line: Using your Amazon Echo speaker as landline phone is a great idea, but the company's Echo Connect, which lets you do just this, works poorly.

Amazon Echo 2 review

Cheaper, smarter and better at listening – but sound needs improvement.

Alexa voice control ; Improved hearing commands ; Smart design ; Affordable

Average sound quality

Everything from the price to the microphone performance has improved. Unfortunately, sound quality hasn't

Amazon Echo (2nd gen) review: smaller and cheaper, but mostly the same

The new Echo's best feature is its price

Lower cost ; Smaller, more attractive design ; Customizable appearance

Below average audio quality for music ; Decorative shells don’t look great

In all honesty, Amazon really didn’t have to do much to the Echo to make it more appealing. It just had to make it less expensive, which is exactly what Amazon did here. The real product Amazon is selling is Alexa, and for an in-home virtual assistant,...

Review: Livescribe Echo Smartpen

Don't you wish there was a way to take notes with a pen and upload them to your computer? And don't you wish that pen...

Ideal for students and journalists who want the best of both note-taking worlds. New 3.5mm headphone jack is now compatible with most headphones. Tons of dot paper options that are relatively cheap. Echo comes with a 50-page notebook. Learn foreign...

Pen is still bulky and awkward. Plan on sitting in the front class if you want clear audio records. Wireless uploading would be nice. Still no built-in handwriting-to-text conversion

Amazon Echo review: The best way to experience Alexa?

If you want to dip your toe into the world of Alexa, the Echo might seem like the obvious choice. However, with the Plus better for music and the Show

Alexa is a wonderful smart home controller ; Compact design with changeable skins ; Lots of third-party compatibility ; Affordable price

Sound quality isn't great ; No physical volume control ring ; Software is occasionally buggy

The Amazon Echo with Alexa voice control is difficult to ignore thanks to its £90 asking price - remember, the 2014 model was £149! - and bevy of features.

Amazon Echo (2nd Gen) review

Alexa gets a brand new look

More compact and colourful ; Alexa is constantly getting smarter ; Great price

Sound is merely OK

All the same smarts, but for a lot less cash. For first time smart speaker buyers, the new Echo is a no-brainer
