If you are looking for a digital recorder to replace that aging VCR, then this is one to seriously consider.
Slim profile; burns to dual layer DVD; DTS output; progressive scan
G-Link hard to setup

The Pioneer DVR-633H-S takes capacity seriously: Equipped with support for dual-layer DVD-R and a 160GB hard drive, it can record up to 17 hours of video to a dual-layer disc and up to 340 hours to its hard drive. Realistically, though, dual-layer...
Conveniently, the DVR-633H-S comes with an IR emitter that controls most cable boxes (so you can change channels using Pioneer's remote). The unit also supports Windows Media audio and video formats stored on disc

The Pioneer DVR-533H-S is dual-layer DVD-R compatible; solid recording quality; intuitive, comprehensive menus; free TV Guide electronic programming guide worked properly in our tests; high-speed video dubbing and archiving; custom recording modes;...
The Pioneer DVR-533H-S cannot record to DVD+R/RW or DVD-RAM; TV Guide not compatible with satellite TV and is clunkier than TiVo; crowded remote; no coaxial digital audio output.
With dual-layer recording, a host of conveniences, and a slim look, the full-featured Pioneer DVR-533H-S recorder seems like a bargain.

I primarily purchased this unit to copy old VCR tapes, and possibly edit the commercials, and to record special events, and then go back and record them to disk WITHOUT the commercials (e.g Olympic Games, Super Bowl-although you may WANT those ...
Very strong editing capabilities. Large hard drive.
Almost unbelievable difficult and unintuitive to use.

Lots of hard disk space, flexible programming options, easy to create DVD's
TV Guide feature doesn't work ; strange audio drop-outs ruin recordings

I have "taped" a number of shows with the DVR-633H-S to the HD and for the most part I'm happy. But the TV Guide thing is for crap. It is suppose to pick up all the information from your cable box so that recording is simply "click on the program." ...

When first plugged in and for the 1st week the device worked as billed... Then things started going awry. More on that below. What I really like about this DVR is that I can watch something I recorded to the hard drive while it's recording ...
Can watch a recorded program while it records something else
THE TV GUIDE FEATURE

On DVD Recording Well, as the box claims this thing is a “DVD RECORDER”, I guess I should start reviewing this beast as a “DVD RECORDER”. To put it bluntly, I hate it, as a dvd recorder. I find my wife’s computer (with a DVD R/W ...
NO MONTHLY FEES!!!, Skips commercials easily, plays video from beginning while still recording
Expensive, DVD recording severely limited, remote control crowded with tiny buttons
