a good starter lens for enthuisast amateurs, unfortunately very poor depth of filed

good vignetting, low distortion, very sharp images, good chromatic aberration, useful VR

This was the kit lens that came with my D5000. Cheap materials but well built, this is a good starting point for a DSLR shooter. Throughout the zoom range and starting at max aperture, it gives pleasant results. But the zoom range is so limited that...

Usable image quality throughout the zoom range, good VR, good price/quality ratio

Limited zoom range, limited fastness, plastic mount, doesn't come with lens hood, difficult to use manual focus, lens thread turns when zooming and focusing
