Kyocera DuraPlus (Sprint)

The Kyocera DuraPlus is a massive brick of a push-to-talk cell phone that uses Sprint's new Direct Connect service.

Rugged. Good call quality. Long battery life. Powerful LED flashlight.

Huge. Outdated UI. Few features beyond voice.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions Rugged form factor and Direct Connect aside, the DuraPlus is an almost featureless feature phone. The main menu is the same 12 icon grid that Sprint has used on many flip phones in the past (including the DuraCore and...

Kyocera DuraPlus (Sprint) review

There's no doubt that the Kyocera DuraPlus is one tough cookie. When I wrote about its introduction in March, I admitted that I couldn't wait to get one in for review just so I could knock it around.

The Kyocera DuraPlus is made tough and its built-in LED flashlight is useful for low-light environments. The Sprint Direct Connect push-to-talk feature works well and call quality is solid.

The DuraPlus has a look only a mother can love and it could stand to lose a few ounces. It doesn't have a camera, a microSD slot, or a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

If looks aren't important, and you want a basic rugged phone that can make good calls and withstand being kicked around and dropped underwater, consider the DuraPlus. But be aware: its clunkiness will give your hand a workout.

Review: Kyocera DuraPlus for Sprint

The Kyocera DuraPlus can probably withstand the abuse of a tornado. Phone Scoop put this latest push-to-talk handset for Sprint though Boot Camp to see if it lives — literally! — up to Kyocera's claims.

"Worthless"

For those of us loving out Kyocera flip phones and being downgraded through an Asurion insurance claim - this is not even close to the quality of other Kyocera products. Asurion has taken over a week to handle the claim. They repeatedly send the wrong...

You can make a call

Over priced, hard to push keys, no camera, clunky to handle

D.C. is worthless

They sent me an Airave 2.5 to boost my signal, it works but only in the immediate area in the house and between two phones in the house, there's still a long delay before it makes the connection, if the other phone your trying to talk to makes its...

Would be great if it worked when you needed it too.

Rarely works. It often takes minutes to 'set up Direct Connect' ever time you push to talk. Voice quality is poor to non existent.

The Direct Connect does not work.

Don't waste your money. Sprint has a lot of work to do to make direct connect a reality and it isn't going to happen any time soon. Our Sprint Rep assured us we would get an even better product than we had with our Nextels. He obviously hasn't tried to...

None. The direct connect service is the worst I have EVER experienced.

If you are lucky enough to actually make a direct connect connection you will more than 1/2 the time experience broken audio. You will not be able to understand the person you are speaking with. This product has done nothing but disappoint.

"Tough phone for folks who just want a phone."

This is NOT a smartphone, so you can't bash it for not having a camera, etc. It is for people like me who just want a phone with out all the other junk I do not need (including the extra $1000 a year for a data plan). It is simple, rugged, and easy to...

Tough, virtually waterproof. East to use, and technology is better than the Motorola i365 it is designed to replace. Crazy long battery life.

No jack for portable headset.

"DO NOT BUY. HUNK OF JUNK"

I am shocked at how Sprint took a quality service from Nextel and turned it into junk over night. This phone doesn't work most of the in a Direct Connect as it sys not available. Voice call drop all the time or just h ave the incoming audio drop out....

Flash light

Too big, direct connect is spoty at bet, drops calls, poor voice quality

Just Awful.

We had Nextel phones for years and they were wonderful! Then we got these awful Sprint phones and there is nothing good to say about them. Probably 2/3 of the time I can't get ahold of the person I'm calling, so I try and try again and waste so much...

I can't think of any.

Everything! Tinny speaker, can't make out what the other person is saying, drops calls all the time, clumsy menu.
